Is it possible to have too many visually stunning platformers in our lives? The answer is, as well it should be, a resounding NEVER — and Devolver Digital seems to agree, as their latest announcement shows. Meet GRIS, a self-entitled narrative platformer being published by Devolver Digital and developed by Nomada Studio. GRIS has been promised to us by the end of the year, and will release on PC and Nintendo Switch. It features heartrendingly beautiful watercolor art paired with a geometric style and a vague plotline of self-discovery that has us thinking fondly of Diceroll Studios’ Umiro. GRIS‘ synopsis is as follows:
“Gris is a hopeful young girl lost in her own world, dealing with a painful experience in her life. Her journey through sorrow is manifested in her dress, which grants new abilities to better navigate her faded reality. As the story unfolds, Gris will grow emotionally and see her world in a different way, revealing new paths to explore using her new abilities.”
When we’ve been shut in by angry pellets of hail-snow and broodingly pregnant skies in December, it looks as though there will be a ray of sunshine for us that will peek, at least, through our computer screens. GRIS has all the makings of a visual masterpiece that will linger in the soul the way it will certainly linger on the eyes. As always, we’re grateful to Devolver Digital for finding these indie gems, mining them from the caverns in which they grow ripe, and delivering them to our ravenous gaming hands. This is one we won’t miss.
